Supporting Americans Abroad

In addition to consular services performed by the Legation, Fish supported American expatriates in other ways. At the time, most US expats in Egypt were Protestant missionaries who offered a variety of social services to Egyptian citizens and sought to convert Muslims to Christianity. As a result, the expat community was keenly interested in national politics, especially as they pertained to religious freedom and the treatment of foreigners.

Major US organizations included the American University at Cairo, the American College for Girls, and the American-run Cairo YMCA. Bert Fish frequently socialized and communicated with these groups, passing on their concerns to the US Secretary of State, Cordell Hull.
